Riga is a relatively small city but this does not hamper the proliferation of sports clubs and organizations in the city. There are three major sports in Riga: Basketball, Ice hockey, and Football.
There are two major ball clubs in Riga, both have competed and won in international level. The BK Barons/O!Karte (previously Barons/LMT) is a professional men’s basketball club, it is an integral part from Latvia’s newest age basketball history, because it (with a name Princips) was one of the founders of the Latvian Basketball League (LBL) in 1992. Two-time Latvian champion, as well as the 2008 FIBA EuroCup winner. Another ball club is TTT Riga, a women’s basketball team, which means Tram and Trolley Trust. Their accolades include eighteen FIBA EuroLeague Women titles between 1960 and 1982.
Aside from basketball, Ice hockey is one of Riga’s popular sports. Representing the sport is Dinamo Riga, an ice hockey club established in 2008. It plays in the Kontinental Hockey League. Dinamo was established as a successor to the former hockey team with the same name, which was founded in 1946 but ceased to exist in 1995.
Just like any other European country, Football is a religion in Riga, and Skonto FC is the team task to spread those beliefs. Skonto FC is founded in 1991. The club plays at the Skonto Stadium in Riga. Skonto won the Virsliga in the first 14 seasons of the league’s existence (15 in total), and often provides the core of the Latvia national football team.
